MY WEEK IN WESTMINSTER

THIS week I felt privileged to be re-adopted by Fylde Conservatives to fight the 2015 General Election.
Re-selection is certainly not an automatic right for sitting MPs and I was delighted when I was unanimously chosen as the Conservative representative for the 2015 ballot paper.
Before the vote I gave a speech on the things I have done since being elected to represent Fylde in Parliament and the important work to come following the next election.
It has been an honour to serve the people of Fylde and I hope my re-selection is the first step in my being able to continue to do so in the future.
I am only too aware of the challenges ahead should I win the election but am looking forward to a hard-fought campaign before then.
The next day I attended a meeting of the senior leadership team of the special constabulary at Lancashire Police’s headquarters in Hutton.
The work done by police volunteers is extremely valuable and I was delighted to read in the Express last week that Ian Angus had received his British Empire Medal for service with the police in Kirkham.
Back in Westminster, I once again attended Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s Annual Parliamentary Reception in the Terrace Marquee.
The event this year was held to highlight key issues regarding access to treatments and secondary breast cancer.
More women are surviving the disease than ever before but the need for further work to eradicate it is as great as ever.
I discussed with representatives how MPs can work with the charity to ensure it continues to have the biggest impact with its excellent work.
I also had dinner this week with Mike Peters, of Universal Products in Kirkham, who was in London to receive his MBE at Buckingham Palace.
I hosted Mike, his wife and his mother in the Palace of Westminster ahead of their date at the palace and I know all three of them were excited about attending the ceremony.
Mike received the award in recognition of his services to industry in the North West and he is passionate about the local business community.
It is people like him who are helping bring this country through the recession and I know the success of his company is built on a foundation of hard work and enterprise.
