FYLDE MP Mark Menzies said he was impressed by the services on offer for dementia patients when he visited a pharmacy in St Annes.

Mr Menzies was invited to Rowlands Pharmacy on Wood Street, where he met staff and was given details of the work carried out by the store.

While visiting the store he was shown how staff make up special blister packs which contain a dementia patient’s daily medication to help them remember whether they have taken their dosage or not.

Mr Menzies said: “Dementia is one of the key health challenges in Fylde and I am determined to make sure we have the best services for people who suffer from the disease.

“One of the things which has been raised time and again with me by constituents is how difficult it is to keep track of the different medication patients need to take on any given day and to know whether or not they have taken it.

“So I was extremely impressed to see what chemists can offer to help dementia sufferers and their carers get around these problems.”

During the visit, Mr Menzies was given details of the branch’s commitment to being a Healthy Living Pharmacy.

That is one where the ethos and approach is proactive and public health focused by investing in staff development and putting an emphasis on different skills.

Achievement of Healthy Living Pharmacy status is defined by the changes in staff attitudes and approach that encourage sharing of healthy lifestyle and wellbeing advice with patients and customers.

Rowlands Pharmacy manager Louise Coyle added: “We need to improve the public’s health to help ensure our healthcare system is sustainable. Community pharmacy teams can play a major role in this by providing more effective and accessible public health services.

“Our team cares about the health and wellbeing of the local community and completing the Healthy Living Pharmacy programme will demonstrate this commitment.”
