Fylde jobs boost hailed by Mark Menzies MP

Mark Menzies MP has welcomed new figures which show that unemployment in Fylde has dropped by almost a third in the past 12 months.

The latest statistics for the month of April showed there are currently 628 unemployed benefit claimants in the constituency, down 234 from April 2014. That figure was also 34 less than the previous month.

The Member of Parliament, who was re-elected with an increased majority following Thursday’s General Election, said the news proved that the Government’s economic plan was working, with record numbers of people in gainful employment.

He added: “In Fylde we have some fantastic employers; larger companies like BAE Systems and Westinghouse Nuclear Fuels who employ thousands of local people and continue to invest in providing high quality apprenticeships.

“However, to achieve figures like this we rely on smaller businesses and new start-ups which provide huge numbers of jobs locally, and I want to thank them for the work they do.

“The recent election proved that people believe us when we say our economic plan is working. Only with a strong economy can we pay for world-class services and infrastructure and continue our strong support in areas like the NHS and pensions.”

Overall the new figures showed that 317 fewer people in Fylde are claiming unemployment benefits compared to 2010 – a 34 per cent drop.

Regionally there are 166,670 more people in work in the North West than in 2010, while across the UK there are 2.05 million more workers in jobs.

Mr Menzies added: “This Government is committed to achieving full employment, so everyone who wants to work can have the security of a regular pay-packet.

“It is the best route out of poverty, and getting more good jobs across the UK means we can continue to rebuild our country as a place where people who work hard and do the right thing are able to get on.

“Today’s figures show the hard work and the determination of local people to succeed, and prove the Government’s strong leadership and economic plan are working to build a Britain which offers working people security at every stage of their life.”
