Fylde MP backs Love Your Local Market campaign

Fylde MP Mark Menzies has urged residents to Love their Local Market after a national campaign was launched to support street traders.

The Love Your Local Market (LYLM) scheme this year runs between May 17th and 31st and the Member of Parliament said markets provide a great way for local producers to sell their goods.

And Mr Menzies, who worked in marketing for some of the UK’s largest supermarket chains before entering Parliament, believes campaigns such as Love Your Local Market provide an excellent platform to remind consumers what is on offer.

He added: “I have visited farmers markets across Fylde to pick up some of the quality produce on offer direct from our local food suppliers.

“Coming from a retail background, I am keenly aware of how important it is for our high streets to be able to provide a world-class holistic shopping experience in the face of competition from the internet and out-of-town retail parks.

“With that in mind, markets have a key part to play in the Great British high street, and the LYLM campaign is an excellent opportunity for the industry to highlight the role of markets in boosting the local economy, enterprise and consumer confidence.”

Organisers say the LYLM campaign has been a hugely successful initiative, growing to become the biggest ever celebration of markets in the UK.

During last year’s campaign, a record number of 1,200 locations held more than 3,800 market events during the fortnight. Between 2012 and 2014, an estimated 1,500 people have started businesses via the campaign.
