Help boost Fylde’s broadband

MARK Menzies has launched a new campaign to boost broadband speeds in Fylde

The MP says he has been inundated with complaints that broadband speeds in the area, particularly in rural communities, are lagging behind.

While improvements are on the way following an £11m Government grant given to Lancashire he says the public may be able to speed up investment by making a business case for it.

“BT have advised me to make sure as many people as possible register their interest in superfast broadband,” Mr Menzies said.

“Lancashire County Council, Broadband Delivery UK and the commercial sector have plans to boost broadband on a large scale.

“However, the company are understandably led by commercial considerations.

“That means that if enough people register their interest in superfast broadband it will help to make a business case for them to invest earlier in Lancashire and Fylde.”

Mr Menzies wrote to Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Jeremy Hunt, to add his weight to Lancashire’s bid to the Government for broadband investment.

He also wrote to fellow Lancashire MP’s to urge them to do the same.

It led to a massive £11m grant from Broadband Delivery UK which, to be unlocked, must now be match-funded by the private sector and other grants.

Mr Menzies also campaigned successfully for an Enterprise Zone in Lancashire at BAE Systems’ Warton and Samlesbury sites which will also bring more broadband investment in the area around the zone.

With unemployment in Fylde bucking the national trend and falling to 2.6 per cent last month, Mr Menzies hopes as well as helping homeowners, superfast broadband could also boost businesses.

“I’ve been told on numerous occasions that broadband speeds are a problem for business too,” he said.

“So I would also encourage the business community to register their interest with BT to help make the case for improvements.”
