FYLDE’s local MP, Mark Menzies, recently set up a meeting with committee members of Residents Action on Fylde Fracking (RAFF) to discuss their concerns over potential shale gas extraction in Fylde.

Mr Menzies met with four members of RAFF’s committee, together with local resident Mike Hill who has become involved in the issue by working alongside Fylde Borough Council.

This comes On the back of a recent on-shore gas meeting at No 10, where Mr Menzies shared directly with the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Energy, Ed Davey, the concerns that have been raised to him by Fylde constituents.

Mr Menzies said, “I have, of course, paid very close attention to this matter throughout, and have taken necessary actions.

“This meeting was set up by me to gain a greater understanding of the concerns local residents have regarding shale gas exploration and extraction.

“Only then can I fully represent their views to the relevant personnel and departments.”

Previously, Mr Menzies has insisted on a ‘gold standard of regulation’ to be in place, before any further decisions are taken.

Notably, Mr Menzies called for a shale gas strategy group to be set up that would oversee all the relevant departments, which is now in place.

Mr Menzies commented, “I am very pleased that this strategy group has now started meeting.

“Coordinating between DECC, the EA, and the HSE who are responsible for various aspects of regulation, is extremely important, and I welcome the steps they are taking to ensure this process is properly regulated across all the areas of concern that my constituents have raised.”

Mr Menzies has welcomed continued involvement in the issues by local people, encouraging them to make any concerns they have known.

“As a strong supporter of public engagement with shale gas, I would urge you to visit the DECC website if you require further information.

“As I personally requested at the start of this process, the company remains willing to offer site visits to local residents on request.”

In this vein, Mr Menzies has asked RAFF for monthly meetings, to keep him aware of their concerns.
