FYLDE MP Mark Menzies attended a ground-breaking event to learn more about efforts to find a cure for dementia.

The Join Dementia Research morning at Holland House Surgery in Lytham saw representatives from Lancashire Care Trust meet patients and members of the public to discuss how they could help towards the search for better treatments and the ultimate aim of putting an end to the disease.

During the event, Mr Menzies had the opportunity to speak to medical researcher Dan Pulford and Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Mark Worthington, from Lytham’s Greenlands Memory Clinic, about the important work they do for people with dementia.

The Member of Parliament also personally signed up for the research programme after discussions with the team.

Following the event, he said: “Dementia care is extremely important to me and I know how vital research to find new medication is if we are to tackle this disease in the long term.

“In 2012, David Cameron launched his Dementia Challenge and outlined the ways in which we intend to fight this disease, a lot of progress has been made since then but there is still so much work to do.

“After many years of dementia being dismissed as a natural part of the ageing process, we do not know all we should about the disease and research is key to getting us finding better treatments and, eventually, a cure.

“With that in mind, the Government has invested more than £300m into UK research and challenged scientists to find positive solutions surrounding dementia. A separate global fund has also been set up to drive international innovation.

“What is clear is that it is people who will be key to beating this disease and I was delighted to see the number of people visiting the stand to find out more about research efforts.

“I know from those who have taken part in studies how much of a boost it gives them to know they may be helping find a cure for dementia.

“I would encourage everyone to join me in signing up for the Join Dementia Research programme to help save countless lives and end the suffering of millions.”
