I was delighted this week to attend the re-launch of STOPAIDS – a coalition of over 80 UK-based agencies working since 1986 to secure an effective global response to HIV and AIDS.

Through the work of the UK government, the support of the British public and the work of STOPAIDS, nearly ten million people living with HIV around the world are living full and healthy lives thanks to HIV medicines.

The event, addressed by the Under-Secretary of State for International Development, Lynne Featherstone MP, was held to celebrate the rebranding of what was the UK Consortium on AIDS and International Development as STOPAIDS.

STOPAIDS and many others, including Fylde constituents, can be rightly proud of how their contributions have helped to save countless lives from AIDS. But there is much more work to be done. In 2011 1.7 million people died from AIDS-related illnesses. We can’t rest until that number is brought to zero.

I strongly support the government’s support for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, which has saved over 8.7 million lives in a little over a decade. I hope we will see the UK committing £1bn for the next three years of its work so we can finally begin to bring these global killers under control.
