Mark Menzies MP welcomes BAE jobs boost

FYLDE MP Mark Menzies today welcomed a new multi-million pound Typhoon upgrade contract which will protect hundreds of jobs at BAE Systems in Warton.

The £165m order, to deliver further enhancements to the Fylde-built Eurofighter aircraft, was signed at IDEX 2015 in Abu Dhabi this weekend.

The ‘Phase 3 Enhancements Package’ (P3E) will see the jet receive improvements to the maintenance and mission systems on the aircraft, as well as the integration of the MBDA Brimstone 2 precision missile.

Mr Menzies said: “I am delighted this contract has been signed which will see further improvements to the Typhoon, which already has unrivalled capability in the fast-jet arena.

“I am extremely proud of the work carried out by our highly-skilled engineers in Fylde and I know this contract will sustain more than 200 positions at Warton, where the upgrade work will take place.

“The Typhoon is a beacon for the UK’s world-leading capabilities in the aerospace industry and I spend a great deal of time in Parliament supporting the work of BAE Systems and ensuring Ministers continue to spread that message when meeting with potential export customers.

“Jobs matter and it is vital we do what we can to back the company to ensure the well-paid careers and apprenticeships provided by BAE Systems are on offer in Fylde for many years to come.”

The new contract represents an order value of £72m to BAE Systems for the integration of the MBDA Brimstone 2 missile and follows a successful feasibility study and a trial installation commissioned by the Ministry of Defence, which was carried out in 2014.

The news comes after Mr Menzies last year supported the company in securing contracts for a new £365m Captor E-Scan Typhoon radar upgrade and a two-year £120m feasibility study of the UK-French Future Combat Air System (FCAS) Demonstration Programme.
