Mark Menzies on board with new Fylde link to London

FYLDE MP Mark Menzies said a new direct link from rural Fylde to London could help encourage major investment into the area.

The Member of Parliament boarded the first Virgin Rail train from Blackpool North to Euston at Kirkham and Wesham Station this morning, after a long campaign to get the service introduced.

And Mr Menzies said that improved rail and road links for the Fylde were critical to provide employment and tourism opportunities for the future.

He added: “When we were first successful in getting the Blackpool to London service introduced there was some uncertainty whether it would stop at Kirkham and Wesham Station so I wanted to make sure Fylde was not missed out.

“I spoke to Virgin Rail and contacted the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) putting forward the case for a stop in rural Fylde and also wrote to borough councillors, parish councils and local business leaders urging them to do the same.

“I was therefore delighted when it was confirmed that the Kirkham and Wesham stop was to be included on the route and will support it as much as I can.

“I recently spoke to senior executives at BAE Systems who said the service could be useful to staff looking to travel between the capital and their site at nearby Warton. I also know the managing director at Westinghouse Nuclear Fuels at Springfields wrote a very positive letter about the link to the ORR.

“Increased connectivity to the Fylde will make the Warton Enterprise Zone more attractive to businesses which are potentially looking to relocate to the area and so could provide a catalyst for job growth for years to come.

“On top of that, Lytham St Annes and rural Fylde are popular tourist destinations and so a direct link to the south of England may not only increase holidaymaker numbers but also the potential for securing major events such as The Open golf tournament.”
