MP: Investment needed at Fylde railway station

FYLDE MP Mark Menzies questioned the Rail Minister over improvements to Kirkham and Wesham Railway Station during a debate in Westminster Hall.

The Member of Parliament raised the issue during the session, which had been called to look into issues with rail services on the Blackpool North line.

Mr Menzies told the Minister, Claire Perry MP, that the station was badly in need of investment, particularly on its disabled facilities, something which had become even more evident following the recent reintroduction of the Blackpool North to London direct route.

The Minister agreed she would take his points away to see what could be done.

Following the debate, Mr Menzies said: “Having used Kirkham and Wesham Station on a number of occasions, it is plain that it has received little to no investment for a number of years.

“While some work was done recently to clear parts of the platform itself for the longer Virgin trains which now stop there, the facilities are still woefully inadequate.

“A promise was made a number of years ago to install a lift to make the platform accessible for disabled people, but this has never been delivered.

“I understand that the current solution for those passengers is to get a taxi to Poulton to use the lift there and then to write to Network Rail to ask them to reimburse you for the fare.

“That is just not acceptable. I, and my fellow Fylde coast MPs, lobbied hard for the return of the link to London but that should be for everyone, not just those who are able to walk down the stairs.

“Along with a general modernisation programme for the station, I would also like to see refreshment facilities and a park-and-ride scheme which could be used by those wishing to use the new route to the capital.

“I am pleased that the Minister agreed to go away and look at this issue as this is one of the first places many people see when they are coming in to Fylde and it gives a poor first impression to visitors.”
