MY WEEK IN WESTMINSTER

IT has been a busy week in Parliament this week and I have spoken twice to Ministers in the House of Commons to ask for support for Fylde businesses.

Firstly during Prime Minister’s Question Time I urged the Prime Minister to continue to support Typhoon exports to secure the future of BAE Systems’ Warton site, while also reminding him of the quality of the company’s Fylde-based apprentices.

The PM was very generous in his praise of the young workers in his answer and promised to continue to do all he can to increase Eurofighter export orders.

The following day in the Chamber, I asked the Business Minister Michael Fallon what steps his department is taking to support small and medium-sized businesses in Lancashire which are keen to export.

I raised this question as a result of an event I had organised with UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) in Fylde the previous week, where local businesses came along to learn more about marketing their goods and services overseas.

The Minister said the Government, through UKTI, had helped nearly 600 businesses across Lancashire get involved in exporting between April and December 2013 and highlighted the success of my event as a way of getting smaller companies involved in different markets.

Back in Fylde, I have been busy with association work and have been out and about in St John’s Ward, Lytham, canvassing for the forthcoming by-election.

It is always a busy time within the local association when any kind of election is going on and we all gather together to support each other. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my colleagues who have taken the time to assist with the campaign as voting day approaches.

I am always delighted when Fylde residents excel in their chosen fields so it was fantastic to hear the news that Jason Lynn and Michael Gadsby, from Afterglow Show Dogs in Westby, had won Crufts’ Best in Show with their dog Ricky the Standard Poodle.

The two-year-old poodle won the coveted overall title at the famous dog show after tests of his overall health, condition, coat, character, temperament and movement.

Well done Jason, Michael and Ricky!
