MY WEEK IN WESTMINSTER

This week I was delighted to be invited to tour the facilities at Ribby Hall Village in Wrea Green.

As well as bringing thousands of visitors to Fylde each year, the facilities provided at Ribby Hall are well used by local people and I know the new Spa Hotel is extremely popular.

On top of that I was told the park employs around 400 staff, making it an important employer for the area.

With my recent visit in mind, I will be taking the opportunity later this week in the House of Commons to ask the Tourism Minister what steps are being taken by the Government to help the holiday industry in Fylde and around the country.

Last week, I had the opportunity to spend some time with the Royal Marines as part of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme.

The Marines are currently focussing on arctic warfare training following a long period of time serving in Afghanistan.

I believe the British armed forces are the finest in the world and it was a privilege to be able to spend some time watching these skilled professionals at work.

This weekend, I was contacted by a number of constituents from Elswick and Little Eccleston who had been left without gas after a local mains connection was damaged.

On Monday, I contacted the National Grid who informed me that all properties had been visited and the majority of the 1,000 homes and businesses affected had been reconnected.

I have now written to the Chief Executive at the National Grid to ensure all the necessary steps were taken to assist people who may have been struggling to cook and heat their homes in the cold conditions and to get the supply back on as soon as possible. I have also asked what compensation may be available to those businesses in the area which lost revenue due to the outage.

I was delighted to see the Prime Minister announce the Conservatives’ commitment to pensioners in the party manifesto this week.

Thousands of people in Fylde have worked hard throughout their life, saved, paid their taxes and done the right thing and deserve a comfortable and secure retirement.

I am proud to be part of a Government which has again committed to protect Winter Fuel Payments, free bus passes, TV licenses, prescriptions and eye tests for our older people.
