Support our station

FYLDE MP Mark Menzies has pledged his support to a campaign to improve Lytham railway station.

South Fylde Community Rail Partnership (SFCRP), led by Coun Richard Fulford Brown, have been working for years to try to persuade Network Rail to help spruce up the run down platform.

And now, with The Open golf championship coming to Royal Lytham and St Annes in 2012, calls for improvements have been increasing.

SFCRP fear the tired old station will “let the side down” and create a bad first impression when visitors flock in to Lytham in their droves for the big occasion.

So now, in a bid to increase support, Mr Menzies will now write to Network Rail to make a call for action.

Mr Menzies said: “Myself and Coun Fulford-Brown visited the station and it is very clear improvements are needed.

“It is run down and tired looking and will not present the best image to visitors.

“It’s so important that we create a legacy from the tournament and I would hope that a refurbished station would be something that will have a positive influence for many years to come.

“I’ve asked Network Rail to look at anything they can do to help.”

Cllr Fulford-Brown added: “We would urge anyone who supports the improvements to also join the campaign and write to Network Rail stressing the importance of these improvements.

“SFCRP try to maintain the station as best we can but we are limited as to what we can do.

“We need some form of funding to help.”
