Fylde MP welcomes conference centre funding

Fylde MP Mark Menzies has welcomed a Government funding package that will bring a conference centre back to Blackpool, benefiting the entire Fylde coast.

The Growth Fund cash was announced by Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, the Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP.

The new conference centre will be built at the rear of Blackpool’s historic Winter Gardens centre.

Mr Menzies said: ““This money is a huge shot in the arm for the entire Fylde coast and its tourism economy.

“This money will help bring about the conference centre that will bring back major conferences to our coast.

“These events take place all year round, bringing money in after the traditional summer season, giving a huge boost to the hotel and leisure sector.

“This goes much of the way to reversing the body blow suffered when the decision was taken not to award Blackpool a super casino licence.

“With direct rail services to London improving after the electrification of the line to Preston, the chance to attract more conferences will increase.

“And it is critical to maintain a fully operational runway at Blackpool Airport so we can attract people from across the UK and much further afield.”

The cash is part of a £556m boost for the Northern Powerhouse, including £69.8m for Lancashire.

The Winter Gardens Conference Centre is expected to cost around £25m.
