Fylde MP welcomes prospect of new aerospace jobs

Mark Menzies MP has welcomed the news new jobs may be created thanks to an agreement with Turkey.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon told him he hopes new jobs will be created thanks to a deal signed between the UK and Turkey.

In a Defence Topical Questions session in Parliament, Fylde MP Mark Menzies asked: “Will the Secretary of State join me in welcoming the Heads of Government agreement signed at the weekend between the UK and Turkey, securing over 400 jobs in Lancashire?

“Does that not send out a signal that Britain post-Brexit is open for business?”

Secretary of State for Defence Michael Fallon told him: “It does. I, too, am delighted that the agreement has now been signed in principle on the TFX programme, which will combine Turkish and British technology and brainpower into the development of a new fighter aircraft.

“I hope that that will lead to many more jobs being created both here and in Turkey.”

Prime Minister Theresa May signed the deal, with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, in Ankara ahead of a planned contract with a value in excess of £100m.

Mr Menzies said: “This will mean that BAE plays a key role in the development of fighter aircraft for Turkey.

“This will help protect the jobs of more than 400 people in Lancashire – and I welcome the creation of new roles.”
