Mark Menzies has called on the Government to ensure all nuclear fuel for UK reactors is manufactured in the UK.
Speaking ahead of his Westminster Hall debate to highlight the importance of maintaining a skilled nuclear fuels workforce, Mr Menzies, the MP for Fylde which is home to the only nuclear fuel manufacturing plant in the UK, said: “Springfields is a national strategic asset and the people who work there have some of the most advanced nuclear manufacturing skills anywhere in the world.
“I want this debate to draw attention to the importance of Springfields and to get all of the support we need to ensure it has a strong future and contributes to a low-carbon economy.
“It is vital we maintain the skilled workforce at Springfields, the only nuclear fuel manufacturing site in the UK; if we lose those roles, we have to rely on other nations to provide our fuel and that is bad for our fuel security.
“I would like to see the Government make a commitment to ensure all nuclear fuel for UK reactors is manufactured at Springfields.”
Mr Menzies is set to meet again with Springfields workers and unions ahead of the debate this week.
