Headlines continue to be dominated by the contest to lead the Conservative Party, with debate certainly intensifying over recent days. Ballot papers should be reaching members very soon and we will know in just a few short weeks who will be our next Prime Minister.
Whoever takes on that role will have some very important decisions to make very quickly, whether that be addressing inflation and the cost of living challenges we all face or in dealing with the war in Ukraine. I am pleased to hear that both candidates have made clear they will continue to do all they can to support the people of Ukraine and their Government. The United Kingdom must continue to lead the world in standing up to aggression.
The crisis continues to create uncertainty in energy markets and it is worrying to hear that bills are likely to rise again in the autumn. It is important that the Government continues to focus on the support it provides to families and businesses while recognising that whatever is spent must be paid for. Rishi not only has a track record in delivery, both during and after the pandemic, but has a clear plan to provide direct help to those who need it most. As the potential impact of rising costs changes, so does his thinking and it is precisely that dynamic, proactive approach we will need to see us through the coming months.
I am particularly pleased to hear progress is being made with the £400 energy bills support already promised. That includes making sure the money reaches those who do not pay their bills directly, such as those in serviced flats, house shares and those living in park homes. I have been fighting hard to ensure the Government is aware of the issues these individuals and families face and am pleased that plans are now being put in place to ensure the payments reach those who do not benefit from a direct discount on bills.
I know many across Fylde are enjoying a well-earned summer getaway. For a lot of families this will be the first time since 2019 they have been able to enjoy a little summer sun. While I hope lots of people, from Fylde and beyond, will be making the most of our fantastic beaches, flourishing rural tourism sector and brilliant hospitality businesses, I realise that many will be flying abroad.
Over the past couple of months I know many people have faced renewing their passports or applying for the first time. I have been making clear to Ministers the need to improve the service offered and to cut delays. For those waiting on passports, with holidays booked and paid for, the delays are causing real anxiety and stress. There is a clear need to ensure every single application meets the expected service standard. In the longer-term it is important resources are in place to bring down waiting times and I am keen to hear how not just investment but innovation can help in achieving this goal.
Of course, for those not going away this summer, Fylde remains a fantastic place to spend leisure time and I know how keenly our pubs, restaurants and hotels have been anticipating this holiday. There are so many brilliant days out locally and I know our independent shops and businesses will welcome your custom over the coming weeks.
