Fylde MP Mark Menzies has asked the Football League to use its discretion and not dock Blackpool Football Club points after it was placed into receivership.
Mr Menzies wrote to the Football League's chief executive Shaun Harvey following the result of a court battle between Blackpool Football Club owner Owen Oyston and former business partner Valerie Belokon on February 13.
In the hearing, regarding a sum of £25 million owing to Mr Belokon by Mr Oyston, Justice Marcus Smith placed the club into receivership as part of a process that will allow Mr Belokon access to Mr Oyston's assets.
The EFL can dock a club up to 12 points if it goes into receivership.
Mr Menzies said: "I have been contacted by constituents who are long-term fans of Blackpool who are appalled the club could be punished in this way.
"The docking of points is for those clubs who have behaved unsportingly, overspending to get an unfair advantage in the league.
"I would suggest Blackpool are doing well in the league thanks to the sterling efforts of their manager, staff and players, and that this is despite the awful courtroom battle that has been raging, and the ongoing boycott by thousands of fans regarding the ownership of the club.
"The club has been solvent and has been placed into receivership by the courts not through financial mismanagement in the day-to-day running of the club, but because of a protracted legal row between the owner and a former business partner.
"That is no reason to punish the fans and the team."
