I hosted a round table meeting with ministers, unions and management at Westinghouse at Springfields as the business looks at making changes – including sadly some job losses.
We must ensure we minimise any compulsory redundancies.
I have also continued talking the Government to ask that any future nuclear power station deals include the provision of fuel made in the UK – and that would be here in Fylde at Springfields.
We need to keep our skills base and ensure we have the capability to produce our own nuclear fuel in future – that means jobs and energy security for the UK.
It was lovely to meet with guide dog Wenna in St Annes last week.
Just Good Friends highlighted a constituent’s situation and I supported her application for a Guide Dog. I met with Alison from the Guide Dogs North West Regional Centre to hear about their work, and to meet with Wenna and her new owner. It was wonderful to see them together and always great to see such a positive outcome.
I also visited Kirkham and spoke with some of the town’s traders after the Government confirmed the town’s Future High Streets Fund grant. This was part of the process whereby the Government checks on progress and plans and essentially signs off the full funding package.
The town has some £10 million of funding on the way to improve shops, create community facilities, bring housing into the town centre, uncover and celebrate its history, and improve public realm.
Already we have some new businesses set to open their doors – and I am sure more will follow suit. The Government is fully committed to Levelling Up towns like Kirkham and has given local people a huge say in how they want to see the town develop.
We have now vaccinated more than 60 million adults in the UK as our tremendous vaccination programme continues – and it now looks as though the most recent variant of Coronavirus is contained by the vaccine.
Please make sure you get your vaccination as soon as possible. It protects you, your family, the NHS, and helps prevent future mutations of the virus.
